The terms interior decorator and interior designer are often used interchangeably, but they describe different kinds of work. The distinction matters most when a project involves construction, custom detailing or many people who need to act on the same set of decisions.
A decorator primarily works with the visible layers of an existing room: furnishings, textiles, color, art and accessories. An interior designer may work with all of those elements, but also addresses planning, cabinetry, lighting, materials and the documentation required to coordinate them with architects, builders and trades.
For a furnished room that already functions well, a talented decorator may be exactly the right partner. If walls are moving, a kitchen is being rebuilt or a custom home is still on paper, the project needs a designer with construction knowledge and a process for communicating technical intent.
Ask what the professional will deliver. Will there be dimensioned plans and elevations? Finish, fixture and hardware schedules? Coordination with consultants? Procurement, receiving and installation? Clear answers reveal more than a title alone.

Furniture layouts should inform electrical locations and circulation. Cabinetry should be designed around what it needs to hold. Stone transitions, ceiling details and decorative lighting need to be resolved before trades are asking for answers on site.
At JSF Design, we join those conversations early. Our role is to carry the interior point of view through architecture, construction and furnishings so the finished home does not feel assembled in separate stages.
The distinction is not a hierarchy. Decoration gives a home intimacy, color and memory. Art, vintage objects, textiles and personal collections are often what make a highly resolved interior feel alive. The difference is simply that decoration cannot correct every planning or construction problem after the fact.

Review work that matches your scope, not only your preferred style. Ask who will attend construction meetings, how decisions are documented and whether the firm has completed projects of similar complexity. You should also understand who purchases furnishings, manages freight and resolves damages.
For a new build or substantial renovation, early interior design involvement protects both the experience and the investment. For a room that needs a confident final layer, decoration may be the more focused service. Contact JSF Design to discuss which level of support fits your home.
